Chiranjeevi Biography

Chiranjeevi is the undisputed king of Telugu cinema and at the age of 52, he continues to rule Tollywood. The megastar who is known for his power-packed performances on screen, made his entry into film land in Manavoori Pandavulu in 1977 after earning a diploma in acting from Chennai Film Institute.

Chiranjeevi's early life, however, was not easy. Success did not come to him on a platter and he had to work towards it. Born on August 22, 1955, to Venkat Rao and Anjani Devi, Chiranjeevi grew up in his native village, Mogalthur in Andhra Pradesh, under the care of his grandparents since his father's job was transferable. Chiranjeevi graduated with a bachelor's degree in commerce and left for Chennai to pursue a career in cost accountancy. He, however, enrolled himself in the Chennai Film Institute.

Although his first movie was released in 1977 he got recognition only in 1981, for his role as a snake-charmer in Punnami Nagu. Before his first real break in 1983 in the movie Khaidi, he played a lot of minor parts. Khaidi established Chiru as an action hero. From here onwards there was no looking back and he won his first award for the movie Swayamkrushi in 1987. Apart from action, Chiranjeevi is also a dancing sensation and is considered the best dancer in South India apart from Prabhu Deva. Chiranjeevi will always be remembered as the man who imbibed the technique of break dance and introduced it to Telugu cinema.

Even now, at the age of 52, he continues to dance with the same ease as before, which partly explains the mass fan following he commands. Although Chiranjeevi has a track record that any actor would kill for, he has had his share of hiccups too. Between 1995 and 1997 he had three flops and the critics had almost written him off until he bounced back with Hitler and Master which ran for over 500 days. The edge: His fans say that it is hard to find an actor who has so much love towards his fans and the ordinary man. They say Chiranjeevi is a very generous man like Rajnikanth and this is one of the main reasons why his fans will stick by him through thick and thin.
