Witherspoon and American actor Ryan Phillippe got married on June 5, 1999. They have two children: a daughter named Ava Elizabeth, born September 9, 1999, and a son Deacon, born October 23, 2003. To be able to look after the children, the couple alternated shooting schedules for their films. In October 2006, Witherspoon and Phillippe announced that they decided to formally separate after seven years of marriage. The following month, Witherspoon filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason.
