Sarika On Hindi Cinema
Returning to the silver screen after a gap of nearly 17 years, Sarika won the National Award for her role in the film Parzania - Heaven & Hell on Earth. The beautiful and now matured actress actress is looking even better and speaks about Amithab Bachchan and more.
Bollywood today is a much more intelligent place to be in. Is she finding it starkly different from what it was nearly two decades ago? "Hindi Cinema was always intelligent. The difference is that today directors can afford to be intelligent. Today, they have more freedom to make the kind of films they believe in," she opines.
Tell the actress that age doesn't seem to be a consideration for women in Bollywood today, as there is a lot of experimentation going on, and she is quick to retort, "I disagree with that. I think age and beauty will always be a dominant part of any glamorous endeavour. What we see in films today is not about age, but about real cinema. All the top actors are in their 40s. The tall, dark, handsome man is nowhere to be seen. He is either tall or dark and rarely handsome.” And what kind of roles is she looking at now that offers are pouring in? "I want to be part of the films that I believe in. But, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and you end up feeling quite foolish," she reasons.
Sarika was a glamourous star in her times. How would she like to fashion herself in this second run? "I do not believe in the first or second run. There is only one run - and that is the life we are blessed with. Trying to fashion yourself is like trying to wear the wrong shoe," says she philosophically.
Sarika's daughter Shruti Haasan is an upcoming actress and singer in Bollywood.
