Mohanlal Biography
Mohanlal was noticed in Kerala as a villain in the film called Manjil Virinja Pookal(1980). A major break came in 1986 with Rajavinte Makan.
Most striking aspect of Mohanlal as an actor is his versatility. He has shown flair for both sentimental and comedic roles, and has now appeared in over 300 films.
He has won four State Awards and five Filmfare Awards to date. He won the National Special Jury Award for Kireedam (1989). He also won the National Best Actor Award twice - for Bharatham (1991) and Vaanaprastham (1999). Vaanaprastham was showcased at the Cannes Film Festival.
Mohanlal has also produced films under his Pranavam Arts banner (Pranav is his son's name). Some films produced by Mohanlal: His Highness Abdullah, Bharatham, Kala Pani, Vaanaprastham.
He has also acted in Tamil and Hindi films. Recently, Mohanlal is appearing in Ram Gopal Varma's Sholay as Sanjeev Kapoor's Thakur.
"Baba Kalyani" (Released December 2006)- Mohanlal plays a cop heading the Anti-Terrorist Cell. Director Shaji Kailas has given a stylish makeover to his character. Critics may complain about the script's weakness, but the film is a treat for Mohanlal fans, which the box office collections testify.
Another notable film of Mohanlal in 2006 is Thanmarta directed by Blessy. Though released in the last week of December 2005, Thanmatra was seen and talked about during the entire 2006. Thanmatra is the story of a 45 year old government employee who gets afflicted by Alzheimer's disease. He gave the best performance of 2006 with his portrayal of Alzheimer-afflicted Ramesan Nair in Thanmatra. The actor's remarkable body language and thought-provoking expressions breathed life into the role.
No adjectives are enough to describe this world-class performance. Backed by a wonderful and unparalleled performance by Mohanlal, Thanmatra is the best film of 2006.
Mohanlal's another notable film of 2006 is Rasathanthram and Keerthichakra. Meera Jasmine appeared along with Mohanlal in Rasathanthram.
When Major Ravi decided to make a film based on his own experiences in Kashmir, nobody expected it to be so realistic and good. Keerthichakra is one of the best Indian films made on terrorism and war with very few compromises, and that is its strength. Of course, backed by knockout performances by Mohanlal as Major Mahadevan and Jeeva and Havaldar Jaykumar.
